The Best Dog Safe Cake Recipe to Celebrate with Your Dog

Dog birthday cake recipes

It doesn’t have to be your dog’s birthday to celebrate them with a cake!

They’ll love any opportunity to receive a tasty treat dedicated to them (and will love sharing in the excitement with you, regardless of the reason why).

Since dogs have certain food intolerances (and some ingredients can be toxic/dangerous for them to eat), cakes need to be made with specific ingredients that are dog safe.

Dog safe recipes

We’ve gone ahead and found three of the best dog friendly cake recipes.

If your dog has an intolerance to certain ingredients (dairy/lactose intolerant, for example, you can just substitute with another ingredient like water).

DOG SAFE CAKE RECIPE 1:

Carrot Cake with Fluffy Frosting

This recipe is a dog friendly, moist sponge cake with an icing that looks like buttercream (but is actually healthy, yummy and safe for dogs to eat)!

Ingredients:

  • 2 eggs
  • ½ cup peanut butter
  • ¼ cup canola or vegetable oil
  • 2/3 cup milk or water
  • 1/3 cup honey or maple syrup
  • 2 ½ cups shredded carrot (this makes it soft, but you can use zucchini or sweet potato instead)
  • 2 cups wholemeal flour (has better nutrients for your dog than white flour)
  • 2 ½ tsp baking soda

Dog Safe Cake Method:

1. Preheat oven to 180° degrees Celsius or 160° fan forced.
2. Grease and line the base of 2 x 20cm/8″ cake pans.
3. Whisk together eggs, peanut butter, oil, honey and milk (little peanut butter lumps are ok).
4. Stir in carrots, then add flour and baking soda. Stir until just combined (don’t over mix or the cake will get hard).
5. Pour batter evenly between the two cake pans, spread and smooth surface.
6. Bake for 25 minutes or until a skewer in centre comes out clean.
7. Remove from oven and cool on racks until ready to frost as below:

Dog Safe Icing/Frosting:

  • 650 g potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
  • 1 cup plain unsweetened yoghurt (or can use water)

Icing Method:

1. Boil, steam or microwave potato until very soft
2. Whip potato and yoghurt together with an electric beater until fluffy and as smooth as possible
3. Add water as needed to loosen frosting to soft spreadable consistency
4. Use right away and spread 1/4 frosting on one cake. Top with the other cake. Frost tops and sides with remaining frosting, reserving some to pipe decorations if desired (3/4 cup frosting).

DOG FRIENDLY CAKE RECIPE 2:

Coconut Berry Healthy Dog Cake

This recipe is ideal if your dog has a sweet tooth. It uses blueberries and strawberries to add natural flavour and sweetness (plus, a little healthy vitamin and antioxidant boost too)!

  • ¼ cup blueberries
  • 2 tablespoons honey

3. Grease one 10-12cm/4” springform pan with coconut oil.
4. Fill with batter and bake for 20-25 minutes, until the centre is firm.
5. Remove from oven and cool on racks until ready to frost as below:

Want to mix and match a cake to your dog’s preferences?

Some great dog safe ingredients for the cake include:
 Seedless apples
 Blueberries
 Carrots
 Pears
 Potatoes
 Pumpkin

For the icing, dog friendly cake frosting ingredients include:
Natural yoghurt
Applesauce
Bananas
Mashed potatoes
Peanut butter
Coconut oil
A little honey as a natural sweetener!

Remember, you can add dog birthday cake decorations of your choice – treats, vegetables or fruit.

Recommended serving size: since cakes are a “special occasion” food and not a daily treat, the serving size will depend on the size of your dog. Generally, a slice that is 1/8th of the cake or a little less (bigger dogs may eat a little more)!

A Final Note: everyone knows one piece of cake never feels like enough (for human or dog), so why not make it a party and invite some of doggie friends over to help finish the rest?!

We hope your dog enjoys these dog friendly cake options!
