A Puppy Carer provides part time care for our pups in training; often on weekends or for a few days at a time.
It’s the perfect role if you can’t commit to raising a puppy long-term but still want to be part of those special early months. By opening your home, even for a short stay, you’ll play an important part in a puppy’s journey to becoming a life-changing Assistance Dog.
Not everyone can commit to raising a puppy full-time and that’s where Puppy Carers step in.
Puppy Carers provide short-term care for our pups in training, usually for a few days or weeks at a time. This might be for example when a Puppy Volunteer is on holiday.
To make sure each puppy stays on track with their learning, Puppy Carers need to meet the same requirements as Puppy Volunteers. This ensures consistency in training, routines, and care. You may also be asked to attend scheduled classes or host a visit from a member of the support team.
Puppy Carers are responsible for picking up and dropping off the puppy at the Puppy Volunteer’s home (or another agreed location).
Even though your time with each pup may be short, the impact is huge. Every Puppy Carer helps shape a future Assistance Dog, and every puppy you welcome into your home will leave pawprints on your heart.
A Puppy Carer is someone who looks after one of our trainee Assistance Dogs for a short period, e.g. a few days or weeks at time. They are called upon if the full time Puppy volunteer needs a break or wants to leave their home for an extended period of time (e.g. holidays).
A Puppy Carer needs to meet the same application criteria as a Puppy Educator, to provide consistency in training of the puppy. Puppy Carer are requested to participate in online training.
Please note that it is expected that you will pick up and drop off the puppy from the Full time volunteers home or another agreed location.
You must be at least 18 years old to apply. Children can be involved in the experience, but full responsibility for the puppy must rest with an adult. Only the trained adult volunteer can act as the dog handler in public.
Puppy carers are advised if they can take the puppy in there car on outings mostly dependent on the handlers’ skill levels and the pup’s behaviour in certain environments. Regular walking is necessary, but there’s a need to observe the length of outings, depending on the pup’s age and development.
We encourage Puppy Carers to take the puppy on outings, mostly dependent on the handlers’ skill levels and the pup’s behaviour in certain environments. Regular walking is necessary, but there’s a need to observe the length of outings, depending on the pup’s age and development. The pup can also be left at home, in their crate, if needed. Up to 6 months of age they can be left up to 2 hours; over 6 months of age, they can be left for up to 4 hours.
Placements can range from just a day to several weeks, depending on the needs of the pup and our programs. Remove everything after this.
