Puppy Raising- more info
Being a puppy raiser is a full time commitment not to be underestimated. It is a challenge but it is also extremely rewarding. You would look after a puppy from the age of 8 weeks old until they are between 12 – 18 months old, which means taking responsibility for all its training and care.
Assistance Dogs will of course be on hand to support you all the way, from teaching you how to train your dog to covering all major expenses.
As a volunteer puppy raiser you would be expected to:
- Attend an introduction to puppy raising course
- Follow the guidelines and training methods set by Assistance Dogs Australia
- Attend all puppy classes. (To begin with puppy classes are weekly but gradually reduced to fortnightly as the puppy becomes more advanced in his or her training).
- Book and take the puppy to all necessary veterinary appointments
- Provide regular progress reports
- Raise the puppy inside your home
- Socialise your puppy and take him or her with you on all outings (when possible) and ensure he or she is always wearing their Assistance Dogs cape
- Keep a puppy diary with photos so that the end recipient can see their new team mate as a puppy and learn about him/her growing up
- Attend occasional events and activities to help support and promote Assistance Dogs Australia
In turn Assistance Dogs Australia will
- Provide you with full support- as and when you need it
- Provide full training and regular trainer feedback
- Devise a training timetable suitable to you
- Pay for all major expenses
- Ensure the puppy is well cared for if you go on holiday or away for a short period of time.
