A Dog Called Wanda Appeal

Jordan and Wanda the Wonder Dog

Thank you very much for supporting our Jordan and Wanda appeal. Everyone that has responded so far has been very kind with their words and support.

We are determined to train another 5 dogs this year, dogs that will be as special as Wanda. We need to do this as soon as possible, for all those waiting for an Assistance Dog that will change their life.

The Appeal

Natalie, Jordan’s mum heard about Assistance Dogs when she saw us on TV. She quickly relaised that her daughter, Jordan, would benefit greatly from the companionship and help of an assistance dog. She wasn’t wrong.

Wanda was placed with Jordan on 29th November last year. Recently we caught up with Natalie to find out what difference Wanda makes to Jordan and her family’s lives. These are some of the things she said:

v       ‘Wanda has played a huge part in encouraging Jordan to motivate herself to operate and control her electronic wheelchair’

v      ‘Wanda lets us know in the morning when Jordan is awake by doing what we call her floppy ear shake’(Jordan has to be on a vpap machine a nights so it is important to know when she is awake so they can take her off the machine).

v      ‘The most important job Wanda is here to do, and she does a great job of doing -is being Jordan’s best pal’

An Update

Last month Jordan and Wanda, along with three other teams, had their official doggie graduation.

The Graduation signifies the official handover of Assistance Dogs to their new team mate, celebrating the beginning of their beautiful new partnership and an improved way of life for all recipients.

Jordan and Wanda, really enjoyed their day, - Jordan was the most popular girl there- having become a bit of a local celebrity overnight. Jordan and Wanda’s story was featured in the local news and graced The West Australian newspaper.

THE FUTURE

Natalie applied for an Assistance Dog because she knew of the long term benefits a dog like Wanda could give to Jordan. Wanda will be there to support Jordan as she grows up, starts school and makes new friends. Wanda acts as an ice breaker for Jordan and other children, who are sometimes too young to understand why someone would use a wheelchair. Because of her weakened immune system, she only attends preschool occasionally and this also sets her apart from other children making her quite shy.

However, since Wanda came along, the children have started to go up and talk to Jordan to ask about Wanda. Because of this Jordan has made more new friends changed the childrens’ perception. She is no long ‘the girl in the wheelchair’ but Jordan, the girl with the cool dog.
