The Elizabeth and Yebo Story

The Elizabeth and Yebo Story

Assistance Dogs Australia has recently placed our hundredth dog, Yebo with recipient and Springwood resident, Elizabeth Egan.

Yebo, whose name means ‘welcome’ in Zulu, has certainly been welcomed into the life of Elizabeth, who suffers from Guillain-Barrè Syndrome. The syndrome affects the movement in her limbs, making it difficult for her to perform everyday tasks.

But now Yebo is lending her a paw. He helps her to balance, picks up objects for her and can alert someone if she falls. He even picks up the phone for her and can retrieve bottles of water from the fridge.

“Yebo has become the positive, great white presence in our home,” said Elizabeth. “He also makes a big difference for me in terms of public access as he provides security and stability for me when I am out in the community.”

While his stunning vanilla coat and his doleful eyes warm the hearts of everyone he meets, calendar boy Yebo is so much more than a pretty face to Elizabeth. To her, he represents freedom and independence – he really is one in one hundred.
