The Peter and Phoebe Story
West Australian Peter Darch is so happy to have his new match Assistance Dog, Phoebe, who has a heart to match her coat of gold.
“When I got the phone call it was out of the blue. I was so stoked,†he said. “I drop my things all the time and I usually can’t go out much so I am looking forward to cruising down town and getting out to different places.â€
And this is exactly the sort of independence Phoebe will provide, helping him with everyday tasks that someone confined to a wheelchair may have difficulty achieving. She will open and close doors, help him cross the road by pressing the buttons at traffic lights and pick up objects dropped on the floor.
But not only will she give Peter his much craved freedom, she will provide companionship and security, an invaluable gift for Peter and his family.
“I was really excited when I first heard she was coming. My house is all decked out for her with a new lawn out the back and we are in a really central place. The bus stop is just down the road and she will be able to help me to get out more and get free time without people worrying.â€
Phoebe is part of a program initiated by Assistance Dogs Australia, a non profit organisation which trains Labradors and Golden Retrievers to enhance the quality of life for people with physical disabilities, giving them freedom and independence.
As a relatively new charity it is quite an achievement to have been able to touch people in all parts of Australia. If you would like to show your support and help Assistance Dogs improve the lives of many more why not participate in Dogtober - visit www.dogtober.org.au for more info.
